# Mission and History

> Why Elata exists, and the public milestones that got it here.

## Mission

Elata's goal is to make biosignal technology open and accessible: a
marketplace for privacy-respecting biometric apps that bring personal insight
to anyone, using devices they already have.

Three principles run through everything Elata builds:

* **Open.** The [Elata SDK](/overview/elata-sdk) and many earlier projects are open source.
* **Private by design.** Signals are processed on the user's device, and sharing anything beyond an app is opt-in.
* **Accessible.** Many apps need nothing more than a webcam, and consumer headbands cost a fraction of clinical equipment.

In an [October 2025 interview](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/exclusive-either-control-minds-hand-134608461.html),
co-founder Andreas Melhede described the aim as democratizing brain-computer
interface technology, "by the people, for the people."

| 2025 | **ZORP**: an on-chain research platform for encrypted data contribution and participant compensation, which reached testnet | [Archived](/zorp-protocol/zorp-intro) |
| 2025 | **Brain Pong at Token2049 Singapore**: a tournament where players controlled a game with EEG headsets, covered by WIRED | Event |
| March 2026 | **Elata SDK** published on npm: browser packages for webcam heart rate, EEG headbands, and headband PPG | [Live](/overview/elata-sdk) |
| 2026 | **Elata** at app.elata.bio: a marketplace where builders publish biosignal apps and users play them in the browser | [Live](/overview/apps-on-elata) |
| May 2026 | **ELTA token** deployed on Base after an external audit (March 2026); no official liquidity pool yet | [Live](/overview/elta-token) |

Elata has also released other open-source tools along the way, including

[Archive](/archive/overview).
