# Commercialization

> How money moves on Elata: what users pay for, how builders earn, and what Elata charges.

Elata is free to browse and play. Money only moves when someone chooses to
buy something, and every payment goes through Elata's checkout, never through
an app directly.

<Info>
**Status.** In-app purchases are live on a test network (Ethereum Sepolia).
App subscriptions and Elata membership are experimental and may show
"Coming soon" in Elata until they're enabled. See [What's live](/overview/status).
</Info>

## What users can pay for

| What | How it works | Status |
| - | - | - |
| **In-app items** | One-time unlocks inside an app, such as a level pack or a feature. You own the item from then on. | Live on testnet |
| **App subscriptions** | A monthly plan for one app, sometimes with a free trial set by the builder. | Experimental |
| **Elata membership** | One monthly plan that unlocks every subscription-gated app on Elata. Renews manually; nothing auto-charges. | Experimental |

Prices are shown in USDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin. Membership can also be
paid by card. See [Membership and purchases](/users/membership-and-purchases).

***

## How builders earn

| Way to earn | Details |
| - | - |
| **Sell in-app items** | Set up items for your app; your app asks Elata to sell them. See [In-app purchases](/apps/platform/in-app-purchases). |
| **Charge a subscription** | Gate the whole app behind a monthly plan, with no code changes. See [Subscriptions](/apps/platform/subscriptions). |

Revenue is paid to the app owner's wallet after Elata's platform fee.

Builders also earn [Elata Points](/overview/points) for publishing an app and
for reaching play milestones. Points are not money and can't be sold.

## What Elata charges

| Fee | Who pays | When |
| - | - | - |
| Registration fee | Builders | Once per app, in USDC, when registering. The amount is shown in the Build an App wizard. |
| Platform fee | Deducted from builder revenue | On in-app item sales and subscriptions |

***

## Membership and app subscriptions together

Members get access to every gated app without paying each app separately.
For builders, members count as subscribers: they can open your gated app.

***

## What's not part of monetization

Earlier versions of Elata let each app launch its own token on a bonding curve.
That model is **retired**: apps are now registered with a one-time fee, and no
token is involved in buying or selling on Elata. See [What's live](/overview/status#retired).
