# Research Directions

> Planned research directions and earlier research projects, each clearly labelled.

Nothing on this page is part of the live product. Each item is labelled so
it's clear what is planned and what is history. For what you can use today,
see [What's live](/overview/status).

## Federated learning

**Status: Planned (research).**

Federated learning trains a shared model across many devices without
collecting their raw data in one place. Each device improves the model locally
and only model updates are combined. It fits Elata's on-device design, because
it could let signal-processing models improve without raw biosignals ever
leaving users' devices.

It is a research direction, not a live feature. There is no federated
training in Elata or the Elata SDK today.

## Open EEG hardware: ElataEEG

**Status: Archived.**

ElataEEG is an open-source EEG hardware project. In 2025 it was upgraded from
8 to 32 channels with reduced noise. It's no longer under active development,
and the current Elata SDK targets consumer headbands instead. See
[Elata EEG](/home/elata-eeg/elata-eeg-overview) in the Archive and the public
[elata-eeg repository](https://github.com/Elata-Biosciences/elata-eeg).

## On-chain research: ZORP

**Status: Archived.**

ZORP is an on-chain research platform for encrypted data contribution and
automated participant compensation, which reached testnet in 2025. It's no
longer under active development. See [ZORP](/zorp-protocol/zorp-intro) in the
Archive and the public [zorp repository](https://github.com/Elata-Biosciences/zorp).
