# Welcome to Elata

> What Elata is, who it's for, and how to find your way around these docs.

## What Elata is

Elata is a marketplace and an open-source toolkit for **privacy-respecting
biosignal apps**: apps that respond to your heart rate, your brain activity, and
other signals from your body.

* **Elata** ([app.elata.bio](https://app.elata.bio)) is where people find and play these apps in the browser, and where builders publish them.
* **The Elata SDK** is a set of open-source packages that turn a webcam or a consumer headband into a biosignal sensor, with processing that runs on the user's own device.
* **Privacy is built in.** Raw signals stay on the device. Anything shared beyond an app, such as the cross-app biometric Score, is opt-in and can be turned off.

You don't need special hardware to start. Many apps work with an ordinary
webcam. Apps that read brain activity use a consumer EEG headband such as Muse.

<Note>
Elata apps are for wellness, games, learning, and research. They are not
medical devices and don't diagnose or treat any condition. See
  [Safety and limitations](/users/safety-and-limitations).

## How to read these docs

Every capability in these docs has a status, so you always know what you can use
today:

| Label | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Live** | Available now to everyone. |
| **Experimental** | Usable, but may change or have limits. For example, a package that is only available as source code. |
| **Planned** | Direction we're working toward. Not available, and details may change. |
| **Retired** | Existed before and has been removed. Kept here only so old links make sense. |

Pages that aren't fully live carry a tag in the sidebar. The full list is on
the [Status](/overview/status) page.
