# Safety and Limitations

> What Elata apps can and can't tell you, and how to use them safely.

## Not a medical device

Elata and the apps on it are for wellness, games, learning, and research. They
are **not medical devices**. They don't diagnose, treat, prevent, or monitor any
disease or condition, and they aren't a substitute for professional advice.

<Warning>
If you have chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, fainting, or any other
symptom that worries you, contact a medical professional or emergency
services. Don't rely on an app reading.

## Readings are estimates

Camera heart rate, EEG headbands, and headband PPG measure real signals, but in
everyday conditions they are estimates:

* **Conditions matter.** Movement, lighting, sensor fit, and even skin tone can change a reading.
* **Scores are interpretations.** "Calm," "focus," or a Score are built from measurements; they aren't a direct readout of how you feel.
* **Compare with yourself.** Your readings are most useful as trends against your own baseline, not compared with other people.

If a reading surprises you, check your setup ([Devices](/users/devices)) and try
again. More on the science: [Biosignals explained](/overview/biosignals).

## Using apps safely

* **Take breaks.** Neurofeedback and focus apps can be tiring. Stop if you feel unwell, dizzy, or have a headache.
* **Flashing images.** Some games use flashing or rapidly changing visuals. If you have photosensitive epilepsy or are sensitive to flashing lights, check the app's description and use caution.
* **Breathing exercises.** Breathe comfortably and stop if you feel lightheaded.
* **Hardware care.** Follow your headband maker's instructions for fit, charging, and skin contact.

## Report a problem

If an app makes claims that sound medical, behaves unsafely, or doesn't match
its description, tell us. See [Help](/users/help).
